12/16/2023 0 Comments Phi sigma pi msu![]() I would recommend it especially for introverts looking to branch out. I will say I have never heard of anyone regretting joining a fraternity, and it is a great way to meet new people and blossom as an individual. However, this is coming from an outsider. I rarely hear of philanthropy events other than "help us raise money for our specific charity by liking our picture in this competition!" on facebook. ![]() From what I gather, fraternities are less focused on philanthropy than sororities. They are about fraternity, and being there for you even if you may usually be an outcast. You will become extremely close to your pledge class and your "family" in greek life. Based on your focus in your post (and the assumption that you're leaning towards the role of an average redditor) I will assume you would look into houses more like the last two I wrote about. Now I will answer more of what your question asked. I will say that as a standard, Triangle parties harder than Kappa Sig. As a final note, I know most of the guys I'm friends with on Facebook from these two fraternities are redditors. They're nerdy as well, and have the second largest population of engineers in greek life at msu (if that tells you anything) without having the requirement of actually being an engineer. Kappa Sig is super chill, but they throw one or two great public parties a semester. If you're in engineering, I recommend rushing there for sure. ![]() Triangle is the engineering fraternity (don't you dare call them a frat house) that is very good about throwing quality parties, taking care of their guests, and are just a bunch of great guys. In terms of solid fraternities, I would say go Kappa Sig or Triangle. Though their music taste does tend to lean towards black culture. Sorry if I'm offending anyone, but just saying as a white girl, this is refreshing. Like, my black friends go there for parties, but it's not like a "black party" where theres just a few token white girls. What I like about them is it's open to other cultures. Not-so-sleezy but still a bit of your typical frat house is TDX. If you're into that, I know the jewish fraternity AEPi is one (based on personal experience), and I've also heard of Sigma Pi, Sig Eps, and pretty much any off of Bogue. Personally, I'm not into the whole "frat scene." This means your typical bros looking to party hard and fuck as many drunken freshmen girls as they can. To really do this, you need at least a semester under your belt to get the feel for East Lansing. From my experience, I would say it costs about $750 a semester to be actively engaged in all of your house's activities.Ĥ) Consider where you'll want to be living when you move out of the dorms. Dues don't always cover every social activity, either. I really enjoyed my time in a fraternity, but I don't think it scored me any points, socially.ģ) If you rush at all, before you accept a bid, think long and hard about the money that you'll be spending as part of a house. Two houses got in trouble in the same semester for homophobic activities and pledge abuse and god knows what else. ![]() Also, you will already have one finals season under your belt and you'll be able to manage your time a little bit better.Ģ) When I was at State, Greek Life was about 10% of the student body. COnsider rushing in the spring, when the weather is better at the end of your pledge semester and things are a little more laid back. Source: Delta Upsilon Class of 2005 (President, Vice President, Rush Chair)ġ) I rushed fall semester freshman year. ![]() My dorm floor community was awesome, and I became absolutely fantastic friends with about 15 of them. Instead of trying to join a frat, just become super close with the people on your floor. A ton of my friends did frats, and I really don't have anything against them for doing that, but you can get the same, if not better experience without joining one. Take some time and go to a few parties, and talk to some of the people in them when it isn't rush week. The idea of making tons of new friends and the "not possible in any other way possibilities" are not true. Try going to one of those a week later and you might be told no because you're not with 3 other girls. They host awesome parties where anyone is welcome and have tons of free alcohol. My brother in law was a president of a frat, and he's told me that during the first semester of rush week is the easiest way to get people to join. Just don't be suckered into the whole "join our frat speech". ![]()
